No, not the spirits from Poltergeist. Instead we have much more friendly Spirits– from Saint Lawrence Distillery in Clayton, NY! We’ve got them stopping by this Friday, June 28th for our weekly FREE tasting.
One of our favorite homegrown, handcrafted lines, the spirits from Saint Lawrence Distillery are right outta this world. We just brought in their Downbound Gin, which is unique because it’s barrel aged and “Navy Strength” (aka 114 proof). We also have some old favorites, including Empire Bourbon Cream, and Captain’s Flask Bourbon. AND SO MUCH MORE. A rep from the company will be on hand with many samples from the Saint Lawrence Spirits portfolio.

So Here’s Something a Little Bit Different
…but only a little. Here at Vintage 20, we really enjoy supporting other local businesses. So it’s always a good day when we’re able to add new products to our inventory that highlight the great stuff being crafted in our little corner of the world, and share them with you. This week’s tasting highlights a local Cidery (for a change): Scrumpy Ewe. Located a hop, skip, and a jump away in West Fulton, Scrumpy Ewe Ciders are born and brewed in the Schoharie Valley using an interesting variety of apples in a European style. What you get is a cider that feels more like a fine wine. So yeah, this ain’t your mama’s cider.
Nothing against your mama, of course 😉
Join us this Friday, June 14th from 4pm to 7pm to try some Scrumpy Ewe’s goodness, and maybe even learn what “scrumpy” means (unless you already know or decided to Google). We’ll have two ciders open for your tasting pleasure. They’re night and day— and delicious. Hope to see you there!

Our friends at Saint Lawrence Spirits are back in town, and we’ll be sampling the usual suspects AND something new to Vintage 20 Wine and Spirits: Absinthe!
There is a lot of rumor and mystery surrounding absinthe and it’s legality here in the United States, so let’s talk about that for a minute because it’s soooooo interesting!
The first noted consumption of absinthe was in Switzerland in the 18th century, but it’s popularity grew in 19th century Europe (particularly in Paris) as many famous writers, artists, and practitioners of the bohemian lifestyle considered it their drink of choice. I mean, of course it was. Depending on just how bohemian you were, your absinthe came with it’s own special spoon to melt sugar over it, by adding water or lighting it on fire. Of course. Totally normal behavior for alcohol consumption. Not.
Which Brings Me to the Downer…
Whether absinthe has, or has ever had, hallucinogenic properties is hotly debated. It’s ingredients can include anise, wormwood, fennel, and other botanicals. Absinthe also contains small amounts of the chemical compound thujone, which gives it a trace menthol flavor. This compound takes the blame for the supposed “trip” that we hear about, but it’s teeny tiny amounts are unlikely to cause actual psychedelic effects. Womp womp. It is, however, a high alcohol content spirit and I think we all have a friend or a self that is greatly affected by THAT.
Banned in the U.S. in 1915, absinthe has only been legal here since 2007. All things considered, that is a short amount of time. And with no fanfare or hullabaloo about it’s reintroduction to bars and store shelves, absinthe is a spirit that continues to be a bit mysterious and underappreciated.

This month marks the second anniversary of the day we opened the doors here at Vintage 20 Wine and Spirits, and we’ve been loving it ever since. To celebrate, we’ve invited some of our favorite local wineries and distilleries for our weekly tasting events!

Ah, mead season. AKA late fall, when it’s not quite winter and I haven’t committed to having my heat on full blast yet and I need a drink made of sturdier stuff. I’m not even a little bit exaggerating when I tell you that their mead is one of my favorite things in my entire store. It’s local (sourced, crafted, and aged right here), traditionally made, DELICIOUS, and the artwork is pretty cool too. Did I mention it’s delicious?

I am always excited to share when we’ve picked up a great new local product. You may not think of the Saint Lawrence River as super local, but it’s New York State, and Saint Lawrence Spirits uses all that New York and the Saint Lawrence River have to offer to create their stellar spirits!
Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, about this distillery has local roots. They are the first and only distillery using purified water from the Saint Lawrence River. All of the corn, grain, and botanicals come from their own family-owned properties, or other nearby areas in upstate New York.
